Finger Foods

A foggy day in June, at the tender age of nearly 10 months old barely 4 months after starting solids, I noticed this was the second day in a row that Willow refused to take the lovingly made puree’s from the spoon. She pushed it away and basically starved for two days.  I couldn’t figure out why she didn’t want to eat until I gave her a few pieces of cut up cheese. She gently picked it up and then shoveled it in her mouth like there was no tomorrow. I tested more soft finger foods and realized she was completely over purees and was now interested in the novelty of finger foods.

I panicked at first and hadn’t thought of all the finger food possibilities and was saddened that my awesome homemade purees would be long forgotten. The Wholesome Baby Food website assured me that there were many easy things right at my finger tips (pun intended). Here’s a list of our favorite go to finger foods:

  • imitation crab
  • cheerios
  • string cheese
  • pirates booty
  • homemade crackers (recipe coming soon)
  • peanut butter and jelly squares (1 year and over)
  • avocado chunks
  • grapes cut in half then diced three times
  • nitrate free lunch meat
  • frozen peas and carrots, corn, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans (diced)
  • roasted potato chunks
  • roasted yam/sweet potato chunks
  • blue berries, strawberries, any kind of melon, and kiwi

Hi Char – I know this is an old post, but we had TONS of leftover purees (homemade, organic) stockpiled in the freezer when our daughter decided not to eat from a spoon – my three favorite things to do with them to turn them into food a self-feeding baby will eat:

    1. Mix one serving of veg w/ 4 eggs, then scramble
    2. Mix one serving of veg or fruit into multi-grain pancake mix, then make quarter-size pancakes
    3. Thaw fruit or veg, spoon into baby-size popsicle maker, refreeze
